This position exists to support the growth of the Bal Seal Engineering (BSE) through the creation, refinement, and maintenance of BSE custom products (seals, springs, and contacts). This position is responsible for having intimate understanding of customers applications and provide regular communication between Sales, New Product Development Engineering, and Operations to ensure the design, development and testing of all aspects of our components, including new and existing products, meet the customer application requirements. This position is focused on problem solving, process development, evaluating customer requirements and recommending changes to improve product and process performance. This position is responsible for applying standard application and design requirements to new opportunities.

 

Salary range for this position is $90k-110k per year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Establishes a close working relationship with Sales to improve technical support and engages with customers (Teams, Zoom, in-person visits, etc.) to present understanding of our product offerings, discuss applications needs and direct them in their needs for successful implementation of our product into their systems for performance needs
  • Solves customers' technical needs via recommended innovative product/service solutions to meet these needs through technical proposal generation and cost estimates of product solution and related fixturing, procedures and test methods for low and medium complex applications utilizing 3D CAD (Solidworks) models and drawings as well as other in-house tools/software
  • Thorough review and analysis of applications and our potential product offerings through various tasks such as Design of Experiments (DOE), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Product Testing to ensure the best proposed solutions or solution fixes for critical applications
  • Estimates costs and consults with the sales force on technical matters, ensuring that proposed solutions can be integrated with current systems and equipment
  • Reviews industry policies and procedures to ensure data accuracy, security, and regulatory compliance. Reviews reports of production, malfunction, and maintenance to determine or address problems. Provides technical support for the engineering process. Collaborates with other engineering departments and coordinates their disciplines to the development of the project.
  • Contribute with results that are impactful to success of various project milestones and completion
  • Designs, implements, and communicates an operational plan for completing the project. Monitors progress and performance against the project plan. Takes action to resolve operational problems and minimize delays. Identifies, develops, and gathers resources necessary to complete the project. (Preferred)
  • Contract review of customer's technical requirements
  • Initiate, review, and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECO) and Deviations for various compent levels and Change Orders (CO) for various process documentation based on design needs, inspection needs, operational needs, customer requests, etc. with proper communication and documentation
  • Engages with Prototype and Production to resolve problems that arise during and after implementation as well as participate in Material Review Board (MRB) for dispositioning Discrepant Material Reports (DMR) (Preferred)
  • Evaluates current processes for Continuous Improvement (CI) areas to increase efficiency or ensure consistency and reliability of our teams deliverables, develops improvement plan, and works to implement changes supporting overall corporate annual CI savings goals (Preferred)
  • Conducts product training to internal and external customers as well as user training for Engineering programs/systems for Engineering and Sales (Preferred)
  • Up to 10% travel required to BSE facilities, vendors, external customers and/or trade shows
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineer or equivalent technical degree 
  • Other technical qualifications and/or a demonstrated minimum 7 years’ experience in a similar technical environment may be considered

 

Experience:  

  • A minimum of 3 years of Application/Design Engineering experience
  • 6-Sigma Yellow or Green Belt certification (Preferred)
  • Experience with designing small and medium sized precision components made from a variety of polymers and metals (Preferred)
  • Experience working with a variety of manufacturing techniques, materials and processes (Preferred)
  • Experience implementing Continuous Improvement, Lean initiatives, developing and implementing Process Capability studies
  • Experience working with suppliers to improve processes and/or understand and document industry standards (Preferred)
  • Experience working in a supplier-based manufacturing environment (Preferred)
  • Experience utilizing Product Lifecycle/Data Management (PLM/PDM) and Enterprise/Manufacturing Resource Planning (ERP/MRP) systems 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to promote and work in a highly collaborative environment including proficiency in conflict resolution
  • Able to communicate clearly in writing (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings) and explain work to supervisor and others in the group. Can work effectively with peers.
  • Works within well-established practices and clearly defined scope of work and their work is reviewed at project milestones &/or on completion
  • Initiative demonstrated on moderate problem solving within assigned tasks
  • Working knowledge of statistical process control, ability to understand and utilize statistical analysis software (Preferred)
  • Proficient with utilization of CAD modeling software (SolidWorks and/or Inventor preferred) in accordance with Engineering and Manufacturing 3D modeling and drawing best practices
  • Proficient with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools and interpretation of results (Preferred)
  • Ability to utilize ERP/MRP and PLM/PDM systems
  • Strong Computer skills. Oragel Agile, JD Edwards (E-1) as well as the Microsoft Office Suite are all heavily utilized programs at Bal Seal
  • Detailed knowledge of metallurgy (i.e. material strength, hardness, machinability, heat treatment processes)
  • Basic Project Management skills
  • Experience working with Continuous Improvement, Lean initiatives, developing and implementing processes (Preferred)
  • Have the ability to operate in a deadline-driven, dynamic, fast paced environment
  • Initiative to identify and solve problems with little direction or assistance
  • Must be self-motivated and driven problem solver
  • Working knowledge in manufacturing and inspection tools, methods, processes, capabilities, and limitations
  • Working knowledge, understanding and application of GD&T best practices, ASME Y14.5
  • Knowledge of and ability to understand and interpret industry standards and best practices
  • Basic understanding of database needs and the value of well-maintained data
  • Basic understanding of programming logic (Visual Basic, Python, Cold Fusion, etc.) and the ability to write macros for support in automating redundant tasks in Microsoft Office & Solidworks (Desired)
  • Ability to adapt to various computer programs quickly and effectively, including shortcut keys, and typing speed of 40 WPM (Preferred)
